Workshop Description

The Armando, named after prominent improviser Armando Diaz, is a longform improv format that uses a story from a monologist as the opening. This workshop summarizes the format and emphasizes bringing fully formed comedic premises forward from the opening. Topics covered in this workshop:

  • Basics of the Armando format and effective premises
  • How to tell stories for the Armando’s opening
  • How to pull and remember premises from the Armando’s opening
  • How to initiate and sustain premises during the Armando’s body
  • How to practice the Armando with a team or alone

This workshop is useful for any improviser interested in honing premise generation, refining their understanding of the Armando, or wanting to pick up a new format. Most of the workshop’s concepts will translate to formats based on guest interviews or the living room opening.
